Eco Council

Following a rigorous application and assessment process, we are pleased to announce that Down Ampney Primary School is an Eco Schools’ Green Flag with Distinction 2022-2023 award holder.

Through our continued ‘green work’ within school and the community, we first gained our Green Flag award in 2020-21.

The Eco Schools topics that we work on help our young people engage with environmental issues that are important to them and our local community. They also cover a huge range of sustainability issues including the climate crisis, plastic pollution and biodiversity loss.

To achieve this incredible award, we had to be working on 3 different areas within the Eco School Framework: Biodiversity, Waste and School Grounds. The children, staff and wider school community worked hard across the year to raise awareness of environmental issues.

Our Eco Schools Padlet showcases the work undertaken by adults and children across the year, including setting up the school community garden and harvesting vegetables; meeting with our local councillor to discuss the new village housing development and how it meets sustainability targets; developing our school grounds to include a copse with trees donated from the Woodland Trust, pond and forest school and undertaking a science and biodiversity day at Slimbridge Wetland Centre.

The Eco Schools Green Flag assessor was really impressed with our work this year. Here is a snippet of their incredible feedback to us:

“What a fantastic Action Plan you have submitted. It is full of practical ideas and shows you have an ambitious and assured Eco-Committee, which has no doubt inspired others with their work. Your Action Plan shows that your Eco-Committee have carefully considered how they can involve their entire school in their planned Eco-Schools’ activities to achieve maximum impact and raise awareness amongst their school community and beyond. The real highlight for us was the way you are interacting with the wider community like Devere Hotels and University volunteers, and shows an Eco-Committee that’s focused on achieving their goals. We also love the work you are doing with TerraCycle and the services you are offering to your local village, It came as no surprise to read your imaginative, practical, and fun Curriculum Links, making environmental education accessible and engaging, and pointing to a whole school commitment to environmental education. You have an extensive network of groups, charities, and organisations that you have worked with and these are great examples of collaboration. We have loved reading about your journey and are incredibly impressed by all you have achieved. We have no hesitation in awarding you an Eco-Schools Green Flag with Distinction, congratulations!”
