"The Eco Schools topics that we work on help our young people engage with environmental issues that are important to them and our local community."
Our school Eco Council is part of the Eco Schools campaign and through their hard work, the school gained its Bronze and Silver Eco Awards in 2021, along with the prestigious Green Flag award for work on sustainability and global eco awareness.
The Eco Schools topics that we work on help our young people engage with environmental issues that are important to them and our local community. They also cover a huge range of sustainability issues including the climate crisis, plastic pollution and biodiversity loss.
In 2021, the Eco council undertook a school energy review and strived to successfully reduce our energy usage, they worked with the local council to reinstate recycling points at the school to enable us to recycle all of our plastic, card and paper waste, as well as ensuring our milk bottle supply was switched from plastic to glass.
The Eco Council also introduced school wide composting of fruit and vegetable waste and set up a composting area in our grounds. Throughout the year, children undertook work on Global Tourism in Geography, created and coded machines to remove plastic from rivers using Lego Wedo in Computing and learnt about seeds and bulbs in Science, ready to plant our huge delivery from Bulbs4kids in the Autumn.
This year our focus areas are Biodiversity, Healthy Living and Water.
The Eco Council will be starting the Eco Year by planting hundreds of bulbs in the school grounds and creating a wildflower garden with one of our Eco parent helpers.
