Our children learn in one of three classes. By having mixed age classes we are able to offer a greater level of challenge or support when our children need it.
Our Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children.
By having a mixed Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 class, when our new Reception children join us in September they are welcomed by both enthusiastic staff keen to teach them and enthusiastic Year 1s and 2s, ready to help them to settle in to school life. Although the learning in Reception is very different, they get the opportunity to join in with their older class mates, and they enjoy getting straight in to school life. Our Year 1 and 2 children spend some time working within their year group for lessons such as Mathematics and English, but they also get opportunities to learn together during our topic work. The children in Class One benefit from having direct access to their outdoor learning area which is used whatever the weather.
Lower Key Stage 2 (Year 3 and Year 4)
Our small Lower Key Stage 2 class allows for a gentle transition from Year 2 to Year 3. They do some lessons with the Class Three, such as PE and Design and Technology, and they also have their break and lunchtimes together. Although the focus of their work is slightly different, they work on the same topics as Class Three, so that they can continue to learn from each other.
Upper Key Stage 2 (Year 5 and 6)
Our newly formed Class Three allows us to continue to raise the aspirations and expectations of our children. By just having our oldest children together, we can increase their responsibility across the school. We can also ensure that our children are prepared for secondary school by offering individual support and listening to individual aspirations and concerns. Class Three also attend a residential trip with other local primary schools, giving them the opportunity to meet new friends before they move on to secondary school.
